I Struggled To Learn Jazz Piano For 15+ Years

My name is Brenden Lowe and for the last 29 years I've been a student of jazz and will continue to be for the rest of my life.

 

But through out my journey, I've picked up A LOT of valuable jazz education including the creation of my own teaching system that is currently helping thousands of students learn jazz piano. 

 

I've dedicated my life to sharing my jazz education with others because of the awful learning experience I had early in my career. 

 

I thought I was doomed. I thought I was hopeless. All the information I got from teachers, books and videos never added up for me. 

 

Finally I stumbled upon a system that I created myself that finally allow me to organize all the jazz piano information I knew so that I could actually play freely like I had always imagined. 

Here's What I Know...

THERES NOTHING MORE POWERFUL THAN HAVING A STRUCTURED PLAN TO FOLLOW. A MAP. A SYSTEM. I FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY.

 

MY STORY, LIKE MANY OTHERS, WAS QUITE A DISASTER...

When I first started learning jazz piano I tried EVERYTHING imaginable.

 

You name it, I've tried it. Books, dvds, youtube, buying individual online courses on topics like block chords, voicings and every other jazz piano category you can think of. 

 

I wanted to accomplish my dream SOOO badly that I was willing to do anything and try everything. 

 

Although this strategy got me to a professional level after 25+ years, it was TRULY the WORST way.

 

I learned in the MOST WRONG way possible.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED...

#1 - I wasted over $12,000.

You can do the math. I'll do it for you right now. 1 lesson a week @ $80 bucks per lesson for 3 years. Give or take holidays. 50 lessons a year. $4,000 a year. $12,000 for 3 years worth of lessons. 

 

#2 - I only learned 3 tunes by copying my teacher. 

My lessons went as follows. My teacher would sit at the piano and play, while talking, showing me voicings, and licks then he would say, "Okay now you sit here and try." Ummmm...I'm sorry what?!

 

#3 - I still couldn't play or improvise over new tunes.

After 3 years of lessons and $12k down the drain I could play 3 tunes because I learned and had copied the exact arrangement my teacher had played. I COULDN'T play any new tunes on my own or improvise how I wanted to.

 

"Traditional" jazz education was my path.

That style of learning jazz was the reason I blew thousands of dollars, wasted 15 years of my life and was constantly frustrated, depressed and doubtful I would ever play jazz the way I wanted.

 

And like it or not...YOU, yes you...are most likely learning in this style right now.

I've learned all the ways NOT to learn jazz piano. I wish I knew this before but I guess some people have to go through things in order to help others and that's exactly my goal. I want to help you so you don't make the same mistakes I did.

 

When I think back on the path I took I feel pretty ridiculously because the system I created makes complete sense. As I thought more about my journey these analogies and questions formulated in my mind. 

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE QUESTIONS AND SEE FOR YOURSELF

  • Would you learn the alphabet starting from the letter M...or P? 

  • Can you drive from point A to point B without a map?

  • Will you see more results with a Personal Trainer that has a PLAN for you?

  • Would you copy math homework if you knew you were going to have to do it yourself? 

  • Can you build a house without proper tools?

Of course not! But what if you don't adapt?

I DIDN'T FOR 15 YEARS AND YOU NOW KNOW WHERE THAT GOT ME...

We are in the midst of what I call the...

"JAZZ EDUCATION TRANSFORMATION"

Those that decide to continue with the "Traditional Methods" of jazz education by...

  • chasing voicings

It leaves you in the dark. In the unknown. Constantly guessing and stumbling while trying to find your way.

 

It's exactly like the feeling of being lost with no idea how to get to where you want to be.

One word comes to mind...

 

IMPOSSIBLE.
